Pedestrian Deck Coating Systems

A pedestrian deck coating has one job that never changes: keep water out of the structure while keeping people safely on their feet. Everything else — colour, finish, texture — comes after that. Walkways, balconies, terraces, plaza decks, footbridges and rooftop amenity areas all take foot traffic, standing water, thermal movement and UV year after year, and the coating is the only thing standing between that and the concrete below.

Our Starflex and Duroglass pedestrian traffic coating systems are liquid-applied, seamless and cold-cured — no torch, no joints, no demolition — and they are engineered to be laid on the substrates you actually find on site, including damp ones.

What a pedestrian traffic coating has to deliver

Whatever the setting, a walkable surface has to be all of these things at once. A system that delivers only some of them will fail early:

  • Slip-resistant, wet and dry
  • Fully waterproof and seamless, including at upstands, corners and penetrations
  • Resistant to abrasion, wear and point loads
  • Resistant to oils, fuels and de-icing salts
  • UV-stable, with no yellowing or chalking
  • Elastic enough to bridge cracks that keep moving
  • Stable from −30 °C to +90 °C
  • Attractive — and still attractive in ten years

Where MPM systems differ from most liquid membranes on the market is the last point combined with the first: aliphatic finishes hold their colour under prolonged sun exposure, so a slip-resistant surface does not have to look like an industrial afterthought.

Every system is completed with a primer matched to the substrate — Primer 0130 R (rapid, low-solvent polyurethane) or Duroglass FF4416 (universal epoxy) — and closed with an aliphatic topcoat: Starflex Mono Top W (water-based), Starflex Mono Top S (solvent-based) or Polistar E/P.

 

Polyurea and polyurethane: why cold-applied systems last

Our liquid epoxy and polyurethane resins — one- or two-component — share three things: genuine versatility, straightforward application and resistance that does not degrade. They go down by roller, trowel or airless spray, and they cure fast: recoat windows stay short even in demanding thermo-hygrometric conditions.

Polyurea-based pedestrian deck coatings go further. Elongation at break reaches 600%, which in practice means tested dynamic crack bridging — the property that lets a coating stay intact where cracks are stressed by structural movement or thermal shock. The same chemistry gives anti-dust and anti-abrasion behaviour, essential under intense foot traffic, plus resistance to contact with oils and fuels.

Two practical consequences on site. First, the same system can be configured to carry vehicle traffic at greater thickness — useful where a plaza deck feeds a service road or a parking level. Second, and more unusually, several Starflex systems bond to damp substrates. Most competing pedestrian traffic coatings require a dry, frost-free deck; ours do not, which removes weather from the critical path and can cut installation time by up to 50%.

Slip resistance, colour and finish

Alongside damp-substrate primers and membranes, you can choose from an extensive colour range applied with eco-friendly, odourless treatments. The colours are stable: no yellowing, no chalking, no dust, no deterioration of the finish.
Polistar E/P, in its white aliphatic polyurethane version, delivers a solar reflectance index above 103 — meaningful on any deck that sits above an occupied space. For a more decorative result, Starflakes coloured chips sealed under a clear aliphatic polyurethane, matt or gloss, remain one of the most requested finishes for balconies and terraces.
Detailing matters as much as the field. Startex Corner In and Corner Out preformed reinforcements maintain continuity at internal and external angles on balconies, terraces, car parks and plazas — the places where liquid membranes usually fail first.

 

Certified to European standards

This is where a Made in Italy system earns its place on a European specification. MPM products carry more than 100 international certifications, and the relevant ones for walkable surfaces are:

  • EN 1504-2 — surface protection systems for concrete (Starflex HR-S)
  • EN 13813 — screed and floor covering materials (MPM Floor 06, MPM Floor 10, MPM Floor 14)
  • EN 13501-5 / B-roof T4 — external fire performance, on Starflex Ultra FR
  • Bfl-s1 reaction-to-fire classification, available on MPM Floor 06

Refurbish rather than demolish

MPM pedestrian deck coatings are compatible with concrete and asphalt substrates, even when damp, and can be laid over existing bituminous membranes, PVC, metal and tiled surfaces. That means renewing a deck instead of stripping it out.
The arithmetic is straightforward: no demolition, no disposal, no structural downtime, no replacement substrate. Less material and energy wasted, a shorter programme, and the same performance as a rebuild. On an occupied building, it is often the only viable option.

Frequently asked questions

What is a pedestrian deck coating?
A pedestrian deck coating is a liquid-applied, multi-layer system — primer, waterproofing membrane and wear or top coat — installed on any walkable surface to make it watertight, slip-resistant and durable. It is also called a pedestrian traffic coating. Typical applications are balconies, terraces, walkways, footbridges, plaza and podium decks, stadium concourses and mechanical rooms.

What is the difference between pedestrian and vehicular traffic coatings?
The chemistry is often the same; the build-up is not. Vehicular systems are applied at greater thickness with coarser aggregate to withstand point loads, turning tyres and de-icing salts. Pedestrian systems are thinner, faster to install and optimised for slip resistance and appearance. Several MPM systems can be configured either way on the same deck.

Can a pedestrian deck coating be applied to a damp substrate?
With most systems on the market, no — they require a dry, frost-free deck. Several MPM systems are the exception: Starflex Hybrid is formulated for application on wet substrates, and MPM Floor 14 is compatible with slightly damp concrete and asphalt. This removes drying time from the programme.

How long does a pedestrian deck coating last?
MPM systems are engineered for service lives of 20 to 30 years when correctly specified and installed. Actual durability depends on substrate preparation, system selection, film thickness and exposure — which is why we assess the deck before recommending a build-up rather than after.

Can I coat over an existing membrane instead of removing it?
In most cases yes. Starflex systems adhere to old bituminous and mineral-surfaced membranes, PVC, metal, fibre cement, concrete and tiles, with the correct primer. Overcoating avoids demolition, disposal and structural downtime.

Which slip resistance can I expect?
Slip resistance is set by the finish, not the membrane: an integrally textured topcoat, a quartz broadcast or a Starflakes decorative broadcast, each giving a different level of texture and appearance. We match the finish to the exposure — a covered walkway and an open plaza deck are not the same problem.
