Superior protection, unmatched performance and sustainability
When your project demands resilience against the elements, MPM delivers. Our Starflex liquid waterproofing systems redefine protection for roof gardens and green spaces, ensuring long-lasting performance even under extreme conditions.
Total waterproofing for every roof garden
Roof gardens are an investment in beauty and sustainability. But they also face unique challenges: constant exposure to water, roots, temperature fluctuations, and structural stress. MPM’s Starflex systems provide a seamless, elastic barrier that adapts to any surface, protecting your structure against leaks, infiltration, and weathering.
Key benefits
Rapid airless spray application, perfect even for vertical surfaces and ceilings, ensures uniform coverage and faster workflows.
Outstanding adhesion even on wet surfaces and in extreme temperatures, guaranteeing complete protection.
Installation time reduced by up to 50%, minimizing disruption during waterproofing.
Exceptional tensile and shear resistance, maintaining integrity even on complex geometries and structural details.
Crack bridging with elongation over 600% for long-term stability and reliable waterproofing.
Low VOC emissions and eco-friendly formulations.
Starflex: the right system for every building
To protect the integrity of a roof garden, a waterproofing membrane must do far more than block water infiltration. It needs to withstand extreme weather, continuous external stress, and ensure long-term, low-maintenance performance.
MPM’s Starflex liquid membranes deliver exactly that. Designed for roof garden waterproofing, they combine superior resistance, elasticity, and easy application to tackle every challenge: from root and vegetation damage with anti-root technology, to puncturing and hydrostatic pressure from heavy rain.
They endure thermal shocks, soil loads, chemical agents like fertilizers, and intense UV exposure. The result is total waterproofing that prevents mold and bacteria, ensuring lasting protection and stability for your green spaces and the structures beneath them.

Our certifications
Starflex for roof gardens: which system fits best?
| Starflex Ultra | Single-coat, tixotropic, fresh-on-fresh polyurea with strong UV resistance — suited to the exposed roof areas bordering the planted zone (walkways, perimeters, upstands) |
| Starflex Ultra FR | Fire-rated (B-roof T4) version of Ultra — specified where the roof garden project requires fire classification on the exposed membrane areas |
| Starflex HR | Hot-applied, two-component polyurea system — the only product in the Starflex range with certified resistance to root penetration, making it the reference system for the membrane layer that sits directly beneath the growing medium |
Why roof garden waterproofing is a different challenge
Standard roof waterproofing has to survive weather. Garden waterproofing has to survive that, plus permanent contact with a living system sitting on top of it:
| Standard flat roof | Roof garden / green roof | |
|---|---|---|
| Membrane exposure | Direct to sun, rain, foot traffic | Buried under drainage, filter and growing medium |
| Moisture contact | Intermittent | Near-constant, including standing water in retention layers |
| Biological risk | None | Root penetration, organic acids from soil and fertilizer |
| Load | Dead load + occasional live load | Dead + live + fully saturated soil weight |
| Inspection/repair | Direct access | Requires partial or full build-up removal |
Because a leak means digging up planting, drainage and growing medium to get to it, a garden waterproofing membrane has one job above all others: not needing to be touched again for the life of the roof.
The anatomy of a waterproofed green roof
A roof garden is a stack of layers working together, and the waterproofing membrane is only as good as its position in that stack:
- Structural deck – concrete slab, timber, or lightweight structure
- Waterproofing membrane – the continuous, seamless barrier (this is where Starflex sits)
- Root barrier – stops roots from reaching and attacking the membrane
- Drainage / water retention layer – manages excess water and, on extensive systems, holds a reserve for the plants
- Filter fleece – keeps fine growing medium from washing into and clogging the drainage layer
- Growing medium – lightweight substrate engineered for roof loads, not garden soil
- Vegetation – from low sedum mats to intensive planting and small trees
Getting the sequence right matters as much as the products themselves: a membrane installed without a compatible root barrier, or a drainage layer that traps water directly against the waterproofing, will fail regardless of how good the membrane is on its own.
Root resistance: the requirement that sets garden waterproofing apart
Ordinary waterproofing membranes are not designed to resist roots. Over time, roots exploit the smallest joint, pinhole or seam and grow directly into the membrane, and physical barriers alone (sheet products, foils) can still be bypassed at laps and penetrations.
A garden waterproofing membrane needs proven root resistance. This is tested to UNI CEN/TS 14416, the European standard for resistance to root penetration of waterproofing systems used on roof gardens. A liquid-applied, fully bonded, seamless membrane like Starflex has a structural advantage here: with no laps, seams or mechanical fixings, there’s no weak point for a root to find.
Load: what a green roof actually weighs
Every garden waterproofing project starts with the same question an engineer has to answer before planting goes anywhere near the roof: what will this roof weigh once it’s finished, planted, and soaked?
Roof loads are normally expressed in kN/m² (roughly, 1 kN/m² ≈ 100 kg/m²), and a garden roof has to be assessed across three conditions, not one:
- Dead load – the permanent weight of the build-up itself: membrane, drainage layer, growing medium, hardscaping.
- Live load – people, furniture, maintenance equipment using the space.
- Saturation load – the growing medium and drainage/retention layer at full water capacity, which is significantly heavier than at rest and is the figure that actually governs structural design.
The waterproofing membrane sits underneath all of this permanently, so its resistance to tearing, punching and long-term compressive stress has to be assessed against the saturated load, not the dry one. Starflex’s crack-bridging elasticity and puncture resistance are what allow the membrane to keep performing as loads shift and settle over the life of the roof.
Standing water, fertilizer and chemical exposure
Two conditions are far more common on a green roof than on a bare one, and both attack membranes that aren’t built for it:
- Prolonged standing water in the drainage/retention layer, especially on flat or minimal-fall roofs, means the membrane is effectively submerged for long periods rather than briefly wet after rain.
- Fertilizers and organic acids from the growing medium leach downward and sit in direct, continuous contact with the membrane.
A membrane chosen for garden waterproofing needs verified resistance to permanent moisture and to chemical aggression from fertilizers — not just weather resistance. This is where a fully bonded, low-VOC liquid system with proven hydrostatic and chemical resistance, like Starflex, outperforms systems designed primarily for exposed-roof weathering.
Talk to MPM before you start
Every roof garden has a different structure, a different load profile and a different exposure, which is exactly why garden waterproofing shouldn’t be specified from a data sheet alone.
MPM’s network of trained, specialised applicators can assess the specific roof, confirm the right stratigraphy, and recommend the Starflex system that fits.
For over 70 years, MPM has been a leader in protective materials, trusted by professionals worldwide. With international certifications and in-house R&D, MPM guarantees solutions you can rely on – because we design our products to challenge every element and win every condition.
