Construction waterproofing systems

Water doesn’t wait for the right moment. It finds the weakest point in a structure — a crack, a joint, an overlooked detail — and works its way in. By the time the damage is visible, it’s already costly.

MPM’s construction waterproofing systems are built for professionals who can’t afford that outcome. Seamless, cold-applied liquid membranes that adhere to concrete, bituminous surfaces, metal, tiles, and PVC — forming a continuous barrier with no seams, no weak spots, and no compromises.

Backed by 70 years of polymer chemistry expertise and produced in Italy, Starflex systems are engineered to protect every critical element of a construction project: from rooftops to foundations, from car park decks to bridge structures.

Why waterproofing matters in construction?

Construction waterproofing is the application of protective membranes or coatings to structural elements — roofs, walls, foundations, decks — to prevent water ingress, moisture migration, and the structural damage that follows.

In construction, waterproofing is not an afterthought. It is a structural decision. The wrong system, incorrectly specified or applied, leads to infiltration, mould, rebar corrosion, and expensive remediation work. The right system — properly designed and installed — protects the building envelope for decades.

What happens when waterproofing fails?

  • Structural deterioration — water penetrates concrete, accelerates carbonation, corrodes steel reinforcement
  • Freeze-thaw damage — absorbed moisture expands during freezing, causing cracking and spalling
  • Mould and air quality issues — persistent damp environments compromise indoor environments and occupant health
  • Costly remediation — re-waterproofing an occupied building costs 5x–10x more than getting it right the first time
  • Liability exposure — for contractors and specifiers, waterproofing failures translate directly into warranty claims

The three approaches to construction waterproofing

Modern waterproofing practice recognises three primary strategies, defined by BS 8102 and European equivalent codes:

  • Barrier systems (Type A) — liquid-applied or sheet membranes that physically prevent water from entering the structure
  • Integral systems (Type B) — water-resistant concrete admixtures and crystalline treatments
  • Drainage cavity systems (Type C) — manage water that penetrates through, without eliminating it at source

MPM specialises in high-performance liquid-applied barrier systems — the most versatile and durable category for both above- and below-grade applications.

Where Starflex systems are applied in construction

MPM Starflex systems are designed for the full range of construction waterproofing scenarios:

Bridges and viaducts

High-durability polyurea systems that withstand freeze-thaw cycles, de-icing salts, and heavy traffic. Fast cure times minimise lane closures.

Terraces and balconies

Waterproofing for occupied spaces that must look as good as they perform. MPM systems combine waterproof integrity with walkability and aesthetics.

Car parks and decks

Traffic-resistant, seamless membranes for parking structures. Load-bearing, chemical-resistant, and colour-customisable in all RAL shades.

Foundations and basements

Below-grade waterproofing that resists hydrostatic pressure, soil humidity, and seasonal moisture — protecting reinforced concrete from the ground up.

Roofs and flat roofs

Seamless protection for exposed concrete and bituminous roofs. UV-stable systems with up to 30 years certified durability. Broof (T4) fire-rated options available.

Why construction professionals choose MPM

Made in Italy — 70 years of expertise

MPM has been formulating polymer-based waterproofing solutions since 1954. Every Starflex system is designed, developed, and produced in Milan — with full raw material traceability and quality control.

How to choose the right construction waterproofing system for your project

The correct specification depends on four variables:

  • Structure type — new build or refurbishment? Above or below grade?
  • Substrate condition — dry, damp, or actively wet concrete?
  • Exposure class — foot traffic, vehicular loads, chemical exposure, UV?
  • Project timeline — how quickly must the area return to service?

MPM provides technical pre-qualification support to distributors and applicators. Our engineers review project drawings, substrate reports and exposure conditions, then recommend the appropriate Starflex grade, coverage rates, and application sequence.

Partner with MPM: construction waterproofing distribution

MPM is actively expanding its international distribution network. If you are a distributor or wholesaler in Europe, the Middle East or Americas evaluating Italian waterproofing brands, we offer:

  • Exclusive or preferential territorial agreements
  • Full technical training program — product knowledge, application methodology, troubleshooting
  • Marketing and sales support — product literature, TDS, case studies translated to your market
  • Dedicated account management and logistics coordination from our Milan facility
  • Access to MPM’s R&D team for custom formulations where local market conditions require it

The construction waterproofing market is consolidating around brands that can demonstrate certified performance, application versatility, and reliable technical support. MPM delivers all three.

Common questions from specifiers and contractors

What is the difference between above-grade and below-grade waterproofing?

Above-grade waterproofing protects exposed surfaces — roofs, terraces, bridge decks — from direct weathering. Below-grade waterproofing protects elements in contact with the ground, such as foundations and basements, from hydrostatic pressure and soil moisture. Different performance demands require different membrane technologies. Starflex systems cover both scenarios.

What is the difference between polyurea and polyurethane waterproofing?

Polyurea reacts very fast — often within seconds — allowing application even at low temperatures and on damp substrates. Polyurethane membranes cure more slowly but offer excellent flexibility and broad substrate adhesion. MPM's Starflex range includes both chemistries, selected depending on the project's time constraints, substrate conditions, and traffic exposure.

Can construction waterproofing be applied on damp or wet concrete?

Yes. Starflex HYBRID is specifically formulated for application on damp and wet substrates, in some cases also without the need for a primer. This makes it the preferred choice for renovation projects and applications where drying time would otherwise delay the schedule or where climate conditions create persistent surface moisture.

How long does a liquid-applied waterproofing membrane last?

Starflex ULTRA (in FR version) carries certified durability of up to 30 years. Other systems in the range are engineered for long-term performance under continuous UV, thermal, and mechanical stress. Actual service life depends on substrate condition, application quality, and maintenance — our technical team can advise for specific project conditions.

Are MPM products compliant with European building regulations?

Yes. Starflex systems carry CE, ETA, BBA, CAM, and REACH certifications as applicable. Fire-rated Broof (T4) versions are available for applications requiring fire classification. In the UK, BS 8102 governs below-ground waterproofing — our technical team provides guidance on compliance documentation. Full certification data is available on request.
